How to Clean Silver Jewellery at Home: A Simple Care Guide for 925 Silver

925 sterling silver is meant to be worn, and with a little care it stays bright for years. If your silver ring, anklet or chain has started to look dull or dark, there is no need to worry. This is normal, and in most cases you can bring the shine back at home in a few minutes.

Why does silver turn dark?

Silver reacts slowly with sulphur in the air, and also with sweat, perfume, cosmetics and household chemicals. Over time this forms a thin dark layer on the surface, called tarnish. Tarnish is not a sign of fake silver; real silver tarnishes too. The good news is that it sits on the surface and can be removed.

Everyday cleaning: soft cloth

For light dullness, a soft, dry cotton cloth or a silver polishing cloth is all you need. Gently rub the piece in one direction, not in circles, and turn the cloth often so you are always using a clean part. Do this after wearing, before you put the piece away.

Deeper cleaning: mild soap and water

  1. Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild liquid soap.
  2. Dip the jewellery for a minute or two.
  3. Clean gently with a very soft toothbrush, especially around clasps and links.
  4. Rinse in clean water.
  5. Dry completely with a soft cloth. Do not put silver away while it is still damp.

For pieces with CZ, zircon or coloured stones, keep the soaking short and avoid scrubbing hard around the stone settings.

What to avoid

  • Harsh chemicals: bleach, strong detergents and toilet cleaners can damage silver.
  • Rough powders and pastes: abrasive cleaners can leave fine scratches, especially on polished or plated surfaces.
  • Perfume and sprays: put on perfume, hair spray and creams first, then wear your jewellery.
  • Water activities: remove silver before swimming, bathing or going to the gym.

How to store silver so it tarnishes less

  • Keep each piece in a small zip pouch or airtight box, away from air and moisture.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other.
  • Avoid keeping jewellery in the bathroom, where humidity is high.
  • A small anti-tarnish strip or a packet of silica gel inside the box helps absorb moisture.

Wear it often

It may sound surprising, but silver that is worn regularly often stays brighter than silver kept locked away, because gentle contact keeps the surface polished. Rings, silver anklets and toe rings worn every day usually just need a quick wipe now and then.

When to ask a jeweller

If a piece is very dark, has a loose stone or a broken clasp, it is best to have it checked by a jeweller rather than cleaning it hard at home. If you bought it from KYAT, message us on WhatsApp at +91 92514 54676 and we will guide you.
